Instrument assisted soft tissue manipulation (IASTM)
Improve and remodel scar tissue, restore mobility, and reduce pain with targeted, hands-on instrument therapy.

Restore Mobility and Relieve Pain with IASTM
Unlike general massage or manual therapy, IASTM provides a level of precision that’s ideal for targeting problem areas—especially in dense or stubborn tissue. It helps reduce pain, improve flexibility, and restore normal movement patterns by freeing up restricted tissue.
At Function Performance, we often incorporate IASTM into treatment plans for clients recovering from repetitive stress injuries (like tennis elbow or plantar fasciitis), surgery, trauma, or chronic muscle tightness. It’s also a powerful tool for athletes and active individuals looking to improve performance and stay injury-free.
The treatment is generally well tolerated, though you may experience mild redness or tenderness after a session—both signs that your body is starting to heal and restore function.
As always, we don’t use IASTM in isolation. It’s part of a broader, integrated approach that may include corrective exercise, chiropractic care, rehab, or massage—depending on your unique needs.
If you’re dealing with stubborn tightness, old injuries, or limitations that haven’t responded to other treatments, IASTM may be the missing link in your recovery.
Advanced Recovery Through Precision Tools
What Is IASTM?
Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, or IASTM, uses specially designed stainless steel tools to detect and treat soft tissue restrictions, chronic fibrosis, and fascial dysfunction. The instruments amplify feedback through the tissue, allowing the provider to locate areas of restriction that are difficult to identify by hand alone, then deliver precise therapeutic input directly to the problem area.
At Function Performance Sport Chiropractic in Oregon City, IASTM is one of several manual therapy tools we use to resolve stubborn soft tissue conditions. It is particularly valuable for cases that have stalled in a chronic, fibrotic state and have not responded to stretching, rest, or general massage.
How It Works
The instruments are used with targeted strokes across the affected tissue. This produces several therapeutic effects:
- A controlled, localized inflammatory response that restarts healing in stalled tissue
- Mechanical breakdown of fibrotic adhesions and disorganized scar tissue
- Stimulation of collagen remodeling, converting scar tissue into functional tissue
- Improved circulation to the treated area
- Reduced pain and improved range of motion
The result is real, measurable change at the tissue level, not just a temporary feeling of looseness.
Who Benefits Most
IASTM is especially effective for:
Chronic tendinopathies. Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendonitis, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, and rotator cuff conditions that have become degenerative rather than inflammatory.
Post-injury and post-surgical scar tissue. Restrictions from ACL or rotator cuff surgery, meniscus repair, or any injury that left scar tissue affecting movement or causing pain.
Fascial restrictions. IT band syndrome, plantar fascia problems, thoracolumbar fascia restrictions, and other conditions where fascial tissue has become dense and restricted.
Mobility deficits with a soft tissue component. Hip, knee, and ankle restrictions where joint work alone has not fully resolved the problem.
Return-to-sport recovery. Athletes working back from extended rest, injury, or surgery often benefit from IASTM to prepare tissue for full loading.
Other common issues IASTM is used to treat:
- Chronic muscle tightness and adhesions
- Tendonitis and overuse injuries
- Scar tissue buildup
- Myofascial restrictions
- Post-surgical or trauma recovery
- Limited joint mobility and stiffness
- Sports injuries and repetitive strain
What to Expect
An IASTM session typically includes evaluation, treatment, and integration with movement or exercise. You will feel a scraping sensation as the instruments work across the tissue. It is often most intense over areas of significant restriction and eases as the session progresses.
Some mild bruising or redness can occur where adhesions were significant. This is a normal tissue response and resolves in a few days. Most patients feel better almost immediately and notice continued improvement over the following 24 to 48 hours as the tissue remodels.
Integrated Into Your Plan
IASTM is never used in isolation. We combine it with manual therapy, corrective exercise, and progressive loading so the tissue that heals is strong and resilient, not just less painful. Restoring tissue sliding is the first step. Building tissue capacity is what makes the change last.

Common Questions About Instrument assisted soft tissue manipulation (IASTM)
Some pressure or mild discomfort is normal, especially in tight or restricted areas—but treatment is always adjusted to your tolerance. You may have seen or heard of intense sessions resulting in pain and bruising some providers. We find we can get great results without significant pain and bruising.
You may feel a little sore or notice redness where the tool was applied—this is part of the healing response and usually fades quickly.
IASTM uses tools to provide more targeted pressure and precision, helping address deeper restrictions more effectively.
It depends on your condition and goals, but many people notice improvement within just a few sessions.
Absolutely. It’s often most effective when paired with other manual therapy techniques of Active release technique, pin and stretch, rehab exercises, Chiropractic manipulation, Laser therapy, and Shockwave therapy as part of a full recovery plan.
